Other than Bob Dylan, I was, I guess, the first artist to tackle "Gotta Serve Somebody."
I knew that in order to give it the gospel sound, I had to, as I say a lot of times, "Caesarize" it. I've been on the city council, and I'm a pastor, and the song talks about city council members; it talks about preachers; it talks about an array of people. It's a very true song, it's a powerful song. I like the fact that Bob Dylan couldn't care less about what people say or think about his music, because you write what's in your heart. You can place "Serve Somebody" among kings and queens because it deals with the longs pearls-or right into your own home. I don't care who you are, I don't care what you have, because he who dies with the most toys is still dead. He who dies with the most money is still dead. It's a known fact that you have to serve somebody. Now, it's got to be God or the devil, but as for me and my house, I made up my mind that I'm gonna serve the Lord.
