"Solid Rock," is the core and essence of what gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, is all about.

And Dylan's poetic treatment of it, saying, I'm hanging on; it's not pretty. It's intense, it's real life. Not I'm holding on, but I'm hanging on. You know, life tosses and turns us any number of ways every day, and tries our faith sometimes beyond the limits. So, you've got to hang on. We interpolated and included some of the lyrics from the old hymn "On Christ the solid rock I stand, although the ground is sinking sand." That even goes back to the old spiritual, "Noah, Noah, foolish man, built his house on sandy land. Oughta had a home inna that rock," is the way our fore parents sung it when they sung the acapella spirituals. So, Bob Dylan brings it into the current times with his lyric.
